Best Swiss Army Knife for EDC
Swiss Army knife is a multi-tool pocket knife produced by Victorinox. This type of knife has a primary spearpoint-style blade and other complementary attachments like screwdrivers, serrated blades, corkscrew, can opener, and more.
A pivot point mechanism keeps the attachments locked inside a handle, typically of red color and featuring a cross logo. Some Victorinox SAKs also have a locking mechanism to keep the blades and attachments in a fixed position during use for safety.
Swiss Army knives are popular multitool items, but there are also single-blade available if you want a Victorinox SAK without many functions.
1. Victorinox Classic Swiss Army SD Knife
While the boldly printed outer casing can make this product seem like a toy, don’t let its appearance fool you. This tool is made with the same quality materials and craftsmanship as most Victorinox products.

You can expect this knife to last for a long time, even with daily use. Same with all Victorinox knives, this product comes with a lifetime material and workmanship warranty.
Overall, this is the ideal everyday carry (EDC) gear for most household and office tasks. It’s even affordably priced, making it a great starter product for adults who don’t normally carry a knife. If you’re in a situation where you need to punch holes in leather, softwood, canvas, or other materials, there’s a reamer you can use for the job. It makes a more precise hole than a knife or screwdriver.

This multi-tools knife represents the perfect blend of modern technology and versatility. It features an improved grip design for safety, performance, and efficiency.

It may be small in size, but it’s superior in performance, structure, and engineering.

What Should You Consider Before Buying a Swiss Army Knife?
Swiss Army Knives are practically pocket-sized toolboxes, but how do you know which one to buy? With many attachments, styles, sizes, and weights available, it can be tricky to figure out which one is the most suitable for your needs. Hence I’ve created a list of the essential features to consider before buying.
1. Intended Use
Anyone can use a Swiss Army Knife, but knowing what you need out of a SAK will help you narrow down the list of options. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast that loves camping or hiking, you need a SAK with serrated blades for cutting wood, twine, cordage, and rope, among other things. For wilderness exploration or backpacking, a flashlight and sewing attachment are a must.
Construction workers also benefit from other tools like wire cutters and screwdrivers. Plus, you can use these for DIY projects around the house or in the garage if you’re not in the construction field. Swiss Army Knives are also beneficial if you need tools like a nail file, scissors, corkscrews, or can openers for occasional use and travels.
Swiss Army Knives have all of these tools readily available, and sometimes even more. Nonetheless, you must ask yourself whether you will be using all of the functions offered. If that’s not the case, don’t pay money for a multi-function tool when you use only one or two.
2. Size
The size of the cutting blade is an important element to consider, but you don’t want it to compromise the effectiveness of the Swiss Army Knife. Pick a blade too large, and the SAK won’t be as compact or lightweight as you may need. Smaller blades are definitely easier to carry, but you won’t get much from them other than minor tasks.
Figuring how you intend to use the SAK will help you find the ideal balance between portability and functionality. If you’re an average person, a small SAK with few attachments is perfect. You can carry it around in your pockets, bag, or even as a keychain.
On the other hand, consider a larger Swiss knife with more attachments if you’re someone that enjoys creating new things, repairing stuff, or breaking items apart. Larger SAKs are also sturdier and more robust. So, even if they’re a bit larger, you have to sacrifice portability and get more sturdiness in return.
3. Material
Victorinox SAKs feature martensitic steel called Inox, which means stainless. This material is highly resistant to corrosion, and that’s why sailors choose it instead of other brands. It pretty much allows you to use the knife in moist areas and even submerge it in the water for an extended time without suffering corrosion or rust.
I’ve noticed that the knives are not the best at retaining an edge, but the blades offer solid performance cutting soft and thick items like cardboard or wood. Plus, you can resharpen them with any knife sharpener and even river stones when you’re outdoors.
Therefore, SAKs don’t need that much maintenance. This comes in handy if you only use it occasionally at home or regularly outdoors when sharpeners are not readily available.
4. Locking Mechanism
Swiss Army Knives may have different locking mechanisms depending on the model of the knife. Wenger knives had the PackLock, and Victorinox larger SAKs have slide locks or double liner locks. Operating these mechanisms is a breeze due to the unlocking button included in the scales, and you can use them to secure the cutting blade, screwdriver, wire stripper, and more tools.
The locking mechanism is one of the most crucial parts of any pocket knife, as it allows you to use the knife safely. You can lock the blade or the attachments in place and apply pressure as much as the task at hand requires. This safety feature keeps the knife shut tight when you carry it in your pockets.
5. Compact and Lightweight
Swiss Army Knives come in different sizes and weights, each suited for different tasks and preferences. If you only need a lightweight and compact SAK for everyday use, the Victorinox Classic SD SAK weighs only 0.7 oz. and is 2.28 inches in length while closed. You can pretty much carry it in a keychain and it has a set of tools like a blade, nail file, scissors, tweezers, and more.
On the larger end, you have SAKs such as the Victorinox Swiss Soldier’s Knife 08, weighing 4.6 oz. and measuring 4.4 inches in length while closed. This knife is a 10-function tool for field use, featuring a can opener, serrated blade, and more.
6. Style
Victorinox offers a wide catalog of SAKs with different styles to guarantee there’s one for everyone. You’re probably familiar with the classic Swiss Army knife of small size and red color, but there are plenty of other multi-functional styles that suit different needs. There are even one-blade Victorinox available, which are good if you don’t want a multitool but still need a decent knife.
Some of my favorite Victorinox knives I would recommend are the following.
The Victorinox Fieldmaster or The Sportsman if you need a small knife with a bunch of tool supplies. If you want something with even more attachments, The WorkChamp XL and The Hercules have got all a heavy-duty user may need. Lastly, consider the Victorinox Hunter Pro M Alox if you want a cool-looking SAK without many attachments that you may not even need in the first place.
7. Grip
Consider buying a SAK with an ergonomic handle that gives you complete control over it, like the Victorinox Swiss Soldier Knife.
An ergonomic shape lets you use the SAK comfortably. It should be your go-to choice if you use the knife in the field, outdoor activities like camping, or construction sites where you need to apply plenty of pressure to cut through tough materials.
On the other hand, plain handles like in the Victorinox Classic SD SAK are perfect for regular tasks at home or the office. The grip on it is still solid enough whether you’re using the flat blade in a back-and-forth motion or applying pressure over the scissors.
8. Durability
Victorinox SAKs are long-lasting tools capable of backing you up for years. I’ve used a SAK Tinker from the 90s that is still with me up to this day. It has allowed me to make electrical repairs at home, like replacing switches, sockets, and wiring circuits. So, you can pretty much expect heavy-duty performance from these knives.
If you want something more reliable and sturdier, I recommend the Victorinox Alox Series. These Swiss knives are also more robust than the plastic models. The last option would be a customized SAK with fitted titanium instead of plastic materials. However, aftermarket modifications like these are well over $200.
9. Multitool vs Single Blade or Dual Blade
Some Swiss knives don’t have extra tools but only one or two blades, raising the question of whether to buy a multitool or single/dual blade.
Personally, I believe the point of having a Swiss Army Knife is the versatility to use it as a pocket knife, screwdriver, wire cutter, can opener, and much more. A multitool allows you to stay self-reliant, whether you want to cut an apple, make minor car repairs, or open up a box.
Choosing a single-blade Swiss Army Knife makes it lose its utility and effectiveness. Plus, if you really want a single-blade knife, other brands like Spyderco and Buck may be better options.
10. Price
Swiss Army Knives are available from as little as $30 and more than $60. Here’s the price range and what you can expect from the knives under each range.
From $30 to $60
SAKs within this price range are 0.8 inches (20.32 mm) in height and approximately 3.6 inches (91 mm) in length. They weigh around 3.5 oz. and usually feature several attachments like small 2.45″ blades, bottle openers, screwdrivers, serrated blades, and scissors. In this price range, you can find products like the Victorinox Fieldmaster. I particularly recommend this knife because it’s the perfect introductory SAK due to its convenient design and many functions.
From $60 and Up
Knives in this range weigh 5.89 oz. and measure .75″ (19.05 mm) in height and 4.3 inches (or 111 mm) in length. These come with some of the tools mentioned before but also other attachments like window breakers and crate openers. Victorinox SAKs available at this price include the Hercules line. This knife is ideal if you want a compact knife but with more attachments.
11. Buy from the Original Manufacturer
Many knife manufacturers create multitool knives, but only Victorinox makes Swiss Army Knives. Created in 1884, the brand established as the primary “Original Swiss Army Knife” provider for the Swiss Army.
Later, Swiss officials also partnered with Wenger, and the brand started producing what they called the “Genuine Swiss Army Knife.” In 2005, Victorinox merged with Wenger, and the two SAK lines combined in 2013. As a result, only Victorinox makes the Swiss Army Knives we see these days.
So, there you have it. If you want the original and genuine Swiss Army Knife to get the complete experience, there’s no other option than a Victorinox.
Are Swiss Army Knives Guaranteed for Life?
Victorinox Swiss Army Knives come with a lifetime warranty that covers material and workmanship defects. This warranty doesn’t cover damage resulting from constant misuse, regular abuse, or normal wear.
Which Swiss Pocket Knives Are Dishwasher Proof?
Swiss pocket knives featuring synthetic handles or similar materials are dishwasher-proof. However, exposing the knives to high temperatures (130-180° F) and intense cleaning agents for an extended time is likely to cause damage. Avoid putting Swiss pocket knives in a dishwasher, and try washing them by hand if possible.
Final Thoughts
In terms of quality and functionality, you can never go wrong with a Swiss Army knife. It’s a sturdy and useful product that combines several features in a very small and convenient package.
If we were to choose our favorite among the best Swiss army knives, we’d say that the Victorinox Swiss Army Classic SD Pocket Knife takes the top spot. It contains all the basic tools you’ll need for everyday life, and it also comes at a very affordable price. The Huntsman model is also an excellent second choice.
